“Knee Deep in FileMaker Go”…. and a product briefing

Hello everyone!   Just a quick note…  Along with two other companies, RCConsulting has been fortunate enough to be invited to work with FileMaker on FM Go for the past several months.  We provided testing and feedback to FileMaker engineers as the product was being completed and readied for market.  As a result, we are one of the few organizations with enough experience to talk about FM Go in a public forum at this time.

Never ones to shy away from helping to promote FileMaker, over the next 6 weeks we are rolling out a series of events at local venues, briefing customers on FM Go in person.  These events will be formally announced next week, but the dates are:

South San Francisco, CA – Aug 30th
Santa Clara, CA – Aug 31st
Emeryville, CA – Sept 1st
Sacramento, CA – Sept 2nd

These sessions are co-sponsored by RCC and FileMaker, Inc.  We anticipate a high level of interest in this exciting new technology, so attendance will be capped at 100 people per event.

FM Go FREE Training Tool!

Richard Carlton Consulting has released a FileMaker Go training tool, designed to help Developers learn the functional differences between FileMaker Pro (for the desktop), and FileMaker Go (for the iPhone and iPad).

While FileMaker Go is fundamentally FileMaker, it does have certain limitations that are specific to iOS – the iPhone and iPad operating systems – as well as inherent limitations associated with Mobile devices.

We developed the FileMaker Go training tool as a way of helping our internal staff of twenty FileMaker developers rapidly learn the ins and outs of FileMaker Go. However, it soon became obvious that the tool would be appreciated by the FileMaker community as a whole.  Therefore, we are making this available immediately as a free download from the RCConsulting website.

If you believe that we have omitted an important training tip from our tool, feel free to email the information to  We anticipate numerous updates to the FM Go training tool, so be sure to check back frequently to download the updated versions!

The Day the Universe Changed

By Michael Prescott

Every once in a while, something comes along that changes everything – and it often goes unnoticed. In 1973, Motorola introduced the first portable commercial telephone, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X. It was large and clunky and expensive. It was not widely accepted at first.

I remember someone showing one off to a friend and hearing, “Who do you think you are…James Bond?”

But looking back, we can point to that as a moment when everything changed. Until then, a telephone was a link between locations, between one physical address and another. From that moment on a phone could be tied to the Individual: it was now personal.
